Denise and Anita
I was so lucky this week that Denise from Koffords in Colorado is vacationing at Walt Disney World, just a hop, skip, and a jump from my home!! I was able to pick Denise up at her resort, and thanks to blog pictures and Facebook, we recognized each other(cell phone contact helped a bit too). We hugged and chatted like old friends and headed to the fabulous Grand Floridian Resort for hanging out and lunch.
Denise is just as sweet and genuine as she is on her blog, and so lovely! We had a super time, and I want to thank her family again for letting me steal her away for a bit.
Thinking about how we make friends and build relationships online is fascinating to me. I’ve been a long time internet user and the member of several message boards and one in particular that was long lasting and very deep. It began as the members were pregnant with due dates of January 1998, our common bond. We started out large and diverse, and in time we whittled down to smaller but oh so diverse. We were diverse in most every way, race, marital status, religion, location, parenting style, you name it, again our common bond was young children and being women. Since it’s nearly 12 year ago inception we’ve since mostly disbanded and a few of us keep up in email, IM, blog following, and Facebook. The demise was sad, but it makes me think of how those once “cyber” friends became more a part of my life. We’ve visited each others homes and gone on vacation with a few. I attended my first Bat Mitzvah, quite a cool thing for the southern Catholic girl! Those events all because of friends met online.
I have many close friends and mentors right here in my town, but imagine the gifts that I’ve gained from making friends in other new formats.
I know blogging has likely impacted all of you, care to share how?
