The return of hit… run…. score!

Tonight we return to practice with Adrienne’s travel softball team. She is so excited she could burst!!!
Those of you that have followed me for a while know that high school softball was a bit dramatic and disappointing. We were happy to put it behind us. On the other hand, travel ball is wonderful!! We’ve been fund raising for about a month, and it’s been fruitful. Adrienne raised over half of her summer fees, I am so proud. Her team had a garage sale, 2 car washes and raffle tickets, she worked hard, with a little prodding ahem, but it’s all worthwhile.
I’ll be honest, practice and tournaments come with ups and downs………so let me just get done with the negatives.
A plays on a team that is in Orlando, that is a 45 minute drive minimum to practice. Yes we do that 2-3 days every week in season, from now -mid August.
Those practices are 2-3 hours each time.
We do tournaments all over FL, that involves travel, hotels, meals out, money…a lot of money sometimes.
I’m the most likely person to drive her because of the time.
Ok, ok, there’s no crying in baseball………..er softball.
The positives!!!
My daughter loves this sport. She is very good and she wants to play in college.
Adrienne enjoys her teammates and coaches and she listens and is respectful. When she is happy it spills over to all aspects of her life and behavior, it’s almost bliss……….almost, she is still 15.
While watching her practice, I can do some good things, like walk….ok really sometimes I do…..and read….ok mostly I do this, or talk to a few other moms. Most of the girls live closer and are able to drive themselves to practice, so it’s not like when she was 12.
We are lucky, we aren’t traveling out of state this summer, we are doing 2 national tournaments in FL this year….yay for FL being a travel destination!
While traveling to and from practice and tournaments my daughter and I are able to talk, just us, and it’s not like she’ll jump out of the car if I want to discuss something she’d rather not. Driving 70 MPH on the highway helps to keep a captive audience.
Need to know positives, just look at my child, happy as can be.
Batting practice before a game.

Winning a tournament and posing for a picture!

Preparing to smack that ball!!!

So my summer will be busy, but it’s all good, my daughter is growing and learning and working hard for her dream!

How great that Adrienne has a passion! And time in the car always seems like the perfect place for kids to open up to their parents. You’re smart to take advantage of that. And, of course, think about all the exercise (um reading) you can get done during those hours long practices several times a week. Sounds like Heaven.

Anita! I love your blog. And you are so right, travel sports are such a great way to spend time with the kids. Congrats to the girls. Keep us posted as I would love to go to some games.

I have a blog, too. Mostly, I blogged to keep my oldest daughter, Heidi, updated on our lives when she was in Afghanistan. I don’t blog much anymore, no time with all the facebook, etc. Mine is called ‘I am Heidi’s mom’.

    See you soon, girl.

I am so there with you, we just found out today tha Lauren’s golf coach wants her to do USGA Jr. Golf this summer…he has nothing to do with just thinks she really should compete this summer…good bye weekends.

  4. Crazy Mom of Three

Is this a new travel team or something she does every year? I am glad she is happy and you are a GREAT mom for driving her 45 minutes 2-3 times per week! Do your other kids go along on these road trips with you and A?

Hi Anita, I’m so glad the travel season has started for her; kids need positive, healthy activities, if only to balance the mood swinging hormonal surges. πŸ™‚ You should revel in the overflow of any bliss because I promise you that when my Kaitlin was 14-17, the only truly blissful moments were those that I created for myself while bobbing and weaving to keep from colliding with her mood swings. πŸ™‚

Okay, I can say this now since I feel like we’re finally cycling through our first kid.

It can pay off. All the sacrifice of time and expense may have a reward beyond the obvious which you’ve already noted in your post – the time spent with A, her pleasure in playing a game she loves, the fellowship built by being part of a team, etc.

I hope A and you have a wonderful season!

  7. Tammy Howard

I hope she has a great season and you get to read a lot of great books! I mean – take a lot of great walks… Oh heck, I mean read a lot of great books, who am I kidding!

Anita, thanks so much for your kind words! I’m glad you like my work. I love the Mean Mom too! She is just as cool in person than what I gathered from her blog. It was really neat to meet her.

  9. Alex the Girl

All the great comments have already been taken, aww, man. I will leave you with this though, studies have shown that girls involved in school sports, or sports in general, are least likely to end up as teen mothers. Those are some good statistics I’d think.

I am visiting from sits. I hope you guys have a great summer with your ball team. Those are memories that are so treasuered.

You are such a wonderful supportive mom! I can totally understand the negatives of travel ball. Both of my nephews are on a select baseball team and every weekend they have tournaments all over the place. This next weekend one has a tournament 3 hours a way and the other one has one that is only 45 minutes from where we live. They enjoy it though and it is fun to watch them!

I have to say it is a wonderful time you guys get in the car, those will be some special memories!

Lots and lots of hard work, that’s for sure. It’s so nice though to see a girl so into a sport! So so so important in so many ways! You’ve raised a good one there!

I hope they have a great season!

Thanks for stopping by my blog & helping to make my SITS day special!

Good for Adrienne!!! Your kids are just amazing Anita, and you are such a wonderful mother!!! Can’t wait to hear more in the coming weeks…(I like the idea of taking the lap top to practices…I may have to steal that idea! hee hee) πŸ™‚
