Movie Reviews

June 16, 2009 movie reviews 16

We watched three movies in the last few days. One I had seen in the theaters, but the girls didn’t, so we rented it.

The least interesting and quality film we saw was this, “He’s just not that into you”. I was a Sex in the City fan, and I remember when Berger told Miranda this about a guy, and it was like a light bulb moment, she suddenly understood what was going on. Then a book was written with the same title, sort of a how not to find a man book, I didn’t read it, I have a man. Atlast this film was made, not exactly a stellar moment for movie goers. A fairly good cast with Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, and Ben Affleck.
It had a few laughs, made me recall my at times desparate single moments but mostly meh.
Skip it, I’d give it a 2 out of 5.

We all watched Hotel for Dogs, and while the story is a bit sad in the beginning, orphaned brother and sister are willing to steal and cheat for money for food. They hide their dog, the only other thing they share from their once wonderful family life. This plays like a Disney movie, but it’s produced by Nickelodeon, so close. It has cute dogs, nice enough teens and kids and Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon playing the wacky foster parents. Don Cheadle is the caring social worker.
Good family movie, I give it 3-4/5 stars.
This PG-13 movie Kevin, Nick and I saw in the theater. I know I know why am I taking my 11 year old to see violent movies. Liam Neeson portrays a man whose teen daughter is kidnapped and taken into the very savory world of slave trading young women. He is a former spy and his background gives him the tools to track down the most disgusting people and practices.
It was a good older teen/adult movie. Nick loved it ofcourse, but it wasn’t really a movie for him. I’m a bad mom…LOL.
This movie has action, suspense, and keeps you wondering what is going to happen.
My rating, 4 out of 5 stars!

Summer movie watching is so much fun in our house!

That Taken movie looks scary/exciting! And my 18 yr old took the kids she babysits to Hotel for Dogs and SHE loved it, lol. She said she cried. (Trust me, that doesn’t happen often with her and movies, lol)

I took my girls to see Taken. My youngest is Nick’s age – so we can be bad moms together. šŸ™‚ I thought it was a little – far-fetched – at times and that took me out of it. Maybe I’m jaded…

  3. Alex the Girl

The first one sounds like a girlfriend flick. I was a “Sex in the City” girl, too. I passed quite a few New Year’s Eves with them (my husband was working offshore and always took the NYE hitch so he’d be home for Christmas). Aiden was my favorite Carrie Bradshaw boyfriend.

Now that the babies are getting older (they watched Pete’s Dragon last night for the first time), they are actually into watching movies that aren’t animated. We may have to give the second movie a shot.

I love Liam. His voice is enchanting, and I’m sure my husband will sit through Taken with me.

Great movie review. Keep them coming. It’s one of your weekly specials I look forward to!

Taken sounds good! I know my hubby would like to see it. I’m not much of a movie gal, but I’ll give this one a shot!

Geoff and I watched He’s Just Not That Into You and we actually both liked it. Which surprised me. He doesn’t usually like those kinds of movies. He saw Taken with my brother and has been trying to convince the girls and I to see it. He thinks the girls should see it as a warning to “listen to your father”. LOL!

Hi Nita, Haven’t seen the bottom two, but now I will. I did see “He’s just not that into you” and I would have rated it about 3 1/2 out of 5…and I think it should be required watching for middle school and high school girls because self-esteem is lacking for so many of them. And I think in the end, the message was more than the title. šŸ™‚

Taken just looks plain SCARY!!! Maybe I’d watch it if I had someone to hold onto to…

He’s Just Not That Into You — I had heard it got really bad reviews. I don’t pay much attention to reviews BUT regular people were saying the same thing so I decided to skip it.

Hotel for Dogs. We still haven’t seen this one. Maybe I’ll Netflix it for the kids.

I have heard the same about He’s Just Not That Into You from others. I have not seen it yet. My husband and I just saw UP the other night and it was fantastic! Such a cute story. I laughed and I cried!

Thanks for the reviews. I haven’t seen any of these. Hotel for dogs looks like something we could all watch and Taken sounds really good.
I checked out “The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons” at the library. I watched a little yesterday and a little today, I’m still not done! It’s a long movie but it’s good I think.

Well, even if you didn’t take your son to see movies with violence in them, he’d manage to see them on his own. At least you’re there to help if he has any questions or needs any reassurance. šŸ™‚

Oh wasn’t it scary when the bad men pull her out from under the bed on “Taken?” I screamed!!!
Watched “The Reader” too after you posted about it…was curious what your take was on some of the scenes…why was she bathing him in that one scene…she was so controlling! Have you seen, “Revolutionary Road?” If not, don’t waste your time…it was awful! More soon…miss you! Sure you don’t want to fly out to CO anytime soon???

I totally agree about “He’s not that…” – that movie was not very good, and I even paid to see it in a theater! I didn’t like the message it sent out and just felt bummed after watching it. Taken sounds good though… a good one to watch with my husband.
