Book Review: Best Friends Forever

July 14, 2009 book review 10

I ‘ve read all of Jennifer Weiner’s books, and from the beginning I fell in love with her wit and style and her ability to make me laugh at the realities in our lives that are so funny but true.

From the Publisher:

Addie Downs and Valerie Adler will be best friends forever. That’s what Addie believes after Valerie moves across the street when they’re both nine years old. But in the wake of betrayal during their teenage years, Val is swept into the popular crowd, while mousy, sullen Addie becomes her school’s scapegoat.
Flash-forward fifteen years. Valerie Adler has found a measure of fame and fortune working as the weathergirl at the local TV station. Addie Downs lives alone in her parents’ house in their small hometown of Pleasant Ridge, Illinois, caring for a troubled brother and trying to meet Prince Charming on the Internet. She’s just returned from Bad Date #6 when she opens her door to find her long-gone best friend standing there, a terrified look on her face and blood on the sleeve of her coat. “Something horrible has happened,” Val tells Addie, “and you’re the only one who can help.”
Best Friends Forever is a grand, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure; a story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets. It’s about living through tragedy, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends together.

I finished this book last week, and I have to say, this book is so not chick-lit. While the main characters of Addie and Val are woman and have a few crazy, mad-cap adventures, it is so much more. It is the story of their childhood, the good and the bad, the story of a tragedy that drove them apart as friends and what it took to bring them back. At first glance we see Addie as the sad and left behind friend in this book, but we learn so much more. Just because Val is on TV she isn’t nearly as together as she appears. Each woman has grown and and had heartbreak, and we learn that the friendship they once had, has helped them to grow, and to come back together. You will laugh, and cry as you read this book.

Jennifer Weiner’s Best Friends Forever is on sale in book stores today……..rush out and buy it, reserve it at the library or borrow it from a friend, but read it, it will make you want to call your best friend and thank her for being there for you……..I know it’s how I felt.

I’m giving this book a 5 out of 5 stars……..I just loved it!!!

I am so thrilled to be able to add a give-a-way to this review!!!

Well check you out!!! Getting publishers to sponsor giveaways! I’m so impressed!

And it sounds like something I’d like to read, too. I read ‘Good in Bed’ and a short story anthology by Ms. Weiner, and I liked her, too.

Tell your kids – the ones who will be drawing names – that I think they’re the best and the brightest. 🙂
