The morning routine

August 21, 2009 Uncategorized 13

You would think after having children in school for 13 years I’d be a good guide and teacher at this stuff………..right?
Well based on Nick this morning, I suck at it….LOL!
Nick has had football practice every day this week, and it is taking it’s toll on him. He comes home from school, grabs a snack, does homework, some days he goofs off, and then gets ready for football at 5:30. He returns sometime after 7:30, needs a shower before eating because he stinks so bad(his words not mine). This has thrown off his bedtime routine of being in bed @ 8:30 and usually asleep by 9:15 or so. Most nights he’s in bed by 9 and some he was awake til after 10pm. It’s late when he has to be up at 6:30am.
Now I know it sounds like I’m complaining, and I guess I am, but I understand football, and I understand the need to wind down, but what I dislike is the morning.
Today his alarm reverberated at 6:30am…….he didn’t move. About 6:38 I went in, and asked”Nick are you awake? It’s time to get dressed and move it babe.” He was barely at the breakfast table at 6:55, I mean really how long does it take to put on a shirt and pants and socks? He ate, and Kevin ate with him, in the same time, Kevin got dressed, brushed his teeth, combed his hair(see my husband knows how to get this done) and was out the door at 7:15…….I went to check on Nick…………..as I was so unproductively on the computer, and he was moving slow……ugh. The girls were then up and he should have been done in the bathroom, but no…….when I was ready at 7:25 or so, he was still lacking in hair and teeth prep!
So we left a few minutes later than I like, but still in plenty of time and then low and behold…..he forgot his PE bag………..ugh. I give one or two mercy moments a year, where I will bring the forgotten item to school………..shoot his school is 7.5 miles from my house!

My new plan…………early to bed……early to rise…….you know the adage…LOL…………the boy just needs more sleep……….or a cattle prod………….some days either would work.

If you have secrets please share.

I’m right there with you. I used to hate it when I was home and my being on the computer early (when it was best and most convenient for me) seemed to slow everyone else down.

Ugh! You’re reminding about what I dislike the most about the school year. Getting my girls up and out the door in the morning is horrifying! We go back on August 31 and I’m not looking forward to the “Morning Madness” AT ALL.

Ugh getting in to the new routine of school. I am soooo dreading next week because our lives will change so much with two of them being in school now. WE don’t even know what time one of them has to be ready, it will be super early too.

Anyways, I hope for your sake and ours that it just takes a couple of days of getting into the swing of things and then things work themselves out to be easy.

I bet his body is just exhausted! The poor thing! Hopefully he can get some “down” time over the weekends!

I am not sure what Lydia will do this year! She likes to get up with me… and does..but doesn’t have to get up til 7:30!

Do you remember back in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s kids set alarm clocks or clock radios (remember those?) and were expected to get up and out all by themselves? Yeah, whatever happened to that? My kids needed prodding too. Very tired from all their scheduled after school activities. Hmmmm. Oh what a world, what a world…..(and with that, she melted into a big puddle of goo.)

I would say that the cattle prod is a good idea. LOL! 🙂

I love reading your parenting blogs. I’d like to think that they’re preparing me for someday when we have our eventual children… *smiles*

After 4 days of school, I’m still getting them there right on the dot. I think I’m gonna have to try getting them up 10 minutes early–but that would mean getting myself up 10 minutes early too:(

Anita, just wanted to say thanks for your lovely comment on my blog. 🙂

Somehow I knew you’d understand. 🙂 (Mostly because of a post you wrote about how hard it is to see your parents aging.)

It’s never easy–but you just gotta love ’em while you got ’em, I guess. 🙂

We have been back for a couple of weeks and it is getting harder and harder to get my girls going in the morning. Of course who am I to talk it is 11:45 and I am still up blogging.

Funny school hasn’t even started yet and Lauren has already been told her bedtime is getting moved back 30 minutes because at the end of last year she was having morning trouble…trying to head them off I suppose!
