Old Friends, Good Times

Do you have old friends that you are now many miles from?  You may know the kind of thinking of, my husband has such a friend.  Kevin and Jim grew up together, attending the same elementary school, meeting and becoming friends in 2nd grade.  They were Boy Scouts together, and friends all throughout high school.  Kevin went to college in the Orlando area, UCF.  Jim attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis MD.  Still they stayed close, and believe it or not, my very first date as friends with Kevin was with Jim and his younger sister Missy, I can’t remember the movie we saw.
Jim was able to return when we married, and was our Best Man.  He married a year or so later, to Lynn, a fellow classmate of us, and they began their marriage and served our country.  Through the years we’ve each had 3 children, but their lives and the Navy have taken them all over the world, and two different stays in Japan.  Jim is now a Captain and he has major responsibilities.
All this is leading up to tonight, when Jim and Lynn and their kids came over for the evening.  They were in town visiting Jim’s parents for the holiday.  We had a great evening, we sat and chatted for over 3 hours, having some cake, and coffee, and our kids were hanging out and mostly behaving.  We haven’t seen them in years, and yet we talk like old friends do, we laugh about our kids, talk about their military life, our college searches, theirs will begin soon, as their daughter is just a year behind ours.
It was such a nice night, and having company is a good excuse for demanding a group pitch in for a clean house.
I love good friends like this, old friends that you share a history with, childhood inside jokes and tales.  I love that even after years you pick up and share a laugh, a story, and insure that our relationship will continue to grow.  I look forward to the annual letter and Christmas card each year, they aren’t the standard brag and such, but instead are great stories and highs and lows of the year………..Lynn has a way with words.
I hope we remain friends for a long long time…………….such a fun evening was had by all.  May you all have such blessings.

I have several friends like that..but haven’t seen many in years! Also my college roommates are perhaps my best of friends and thanks to Facebook I at least know what is going on in their lives!

I love the type of friends where you can pick up right where you left off -even if it’s been years since you’ve seen each other. Sounds like a truly special friendship and a wonderful evening.

I also am lucky to have many such friends. Always makes me think of the old Girl Scout song:
“Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold”
