Last Day in Texas

July 17, 2011 vacation 5

I have had a fabulous mini vacation.  The four days I spent with my parents were so good, my dad was moving really well and talking tons!!  Between his Parkinson’s disease and his Alzheimer’s  he doesn’t always talk much, dad can become very quiet and he may just sit and watch TV, looking far away.    We talked about his childhood, and my dad started this project putting together an photo album of all his cars and campers/motor homes.  I helped him make a typed up list of all his vehicles.  His first car was a 1937 Oldsmobile, it was fun looking up pictures to compare bumpers and rear tail lights.  The three of us went out to lunch,my nephew came along too.  He just graduated from college, he’s now living my my brother and sister in law and looking for a job, it’s a hard time out there!

Mom and I did some shopping, she generously bought many things the girls need for college, she was so sweet!!

Last night we had a slumber party at my sister’s house.  My sister, niece, her bff, daughter and me,we ate pizza, snacks, and some drinks.  We had a really good time.  Today we all went to see Harry Potter, my other nephew and his family met us there.    I loved the ending, but there was a LOT of fighting.
We got some new air filters for Caitie’s car and then went to the famous and delicious Rudy’s BBQ for dinner.   Great Slogan on the back of the T shirt

“I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat Vegetables”
Ate some classic beef brisket and cream corn, peach cobbler and sweet tea….life is good!!
We are now at my nieces house, Caitie has all her stuff packed up.  We’re watching The Lincoln Lawyer on DVD, I was the only one who stayed up last night and watched it.
Tomorrow,Caitie and I head east for the LONG drive back to Florida in her little Honda CRV.  It will be a long but good trip!!
I’ve been reading MAINE by J. Courtney Sullivan, this week, maybe I can finish more on the way home, family visits don’t leave much time for reading.  It’s a wonderful book, looking forward to completing and reviewing.

Sounds like a lovely time! My mom slipped me some cash the other day to help pay for the boy’s back to school expenses…moms are so great like that. Have a safe trip back to FL!

Oh I LOVE your father’s project! How fun for you, too. And it will be a great momento.

It sounds like you had a wonderful visit. It’s so nice to be able to visit for a reason other than an emergency.

I’m jealous. All my family, except Mom, has left RI now and I truly miss them.

This sounds like a wonderful visit! Good luck to your nephew – it took our son 6 months to find a job after he graduated from college.

How nice to have that time with your parents, and in particular, to do something meaningful with your dad.

And of course, doing some further bonding with your daughter.

    Good for you!

Glad to hear that you had such a good trip and visit with your parents! 🙂 I so know how you feel about your parents – I’m in much the same boat, with my Dad in his 80’s and Mom in her late 70’s. It’s hard to see them growing old.

But on the plus side, it’s great when you can hear stories from their youths – I love that, too! 🙂
