Julia Baily is married with two small boys, and has a vision of healthy kid’s foods. She is the proud owner and creator of Julia’s Child, home to all kinds of interesting organic healthy foods for kids, including the muffet. A muffet is a creation made in a muffin tin, easy to hold for small toddler hands, and Julia is able to introduce healthy veggies and fruits to children in a most unique way.
Just how will Julia put all this healthy food dream and business plan together? She lives in New York City, and along with her friend and associate Marta she’s managed to put her product in a few Brooklyn stores and she’s looking for a few more crunchy moms to take her business over the top, well that and a major grocery chain. Julia isn’t just about the organic talk, she’s for real, having bought some land in Vermont and trying to grow her own foods and have them certified organic as well. Along the way she is working crazy hours, and letting her nanny be with her sons more than she is, and draining she and her husband’s savings account. She running around the city, cooking, flash freezing, storing her muffets and more in odd freezers and trying to do it all.
Julia’s Child is an upbeat, fun read, one that had me laughing at Julia’s predicaments and cheering for her at each big moment. Sarah Pinneo has such a way with her words in this story. I was most touched by the voice she gave Julia as a mother, the many moments when she was rushing in to spend time with Jasper and Wylie. I’ve been that working mom, scooping up my kids at 6pm and trying to play with them, cook dinner, do baths and story time all in the span of about 2 hours and feel like I was still a good mother. As I look back, those were hard days for certain, and Pinneo captures those feelings very succinctly.
While this book is pure women’s fiction, it is well written and has a pace that is quick and easy. I enjoyed it and am giving this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
